The grip

The only contact you have with your club is the grip.

Left handed players need to swop the hand and the direction that I am writing about.

The first photo shows the grip laying in the fingers of the left hand with the heel of the hand cushioned on the top side of the grip.  You then close the hand and the thumb on top of the grip, with the left thumb pointing down slightly right of centre of the grip.

The next photo shows the right fingers performing the same finger hold. Then the right hand closes against the left hand with the right thumb coming down and across the grip forming the right hand "v" which runs parallel with the left hand "V".  Both "V"s should be pointing between the chin and the right shoulder. Grip pressure should be as light as possible.

If you find that you are wearing a hole in your golf club near to the wrist or top of the hand, then you are not gripping as in the first photo, but are adopting a putting grip style instead.  The putting grip has the grip laying in the palm of the hand and not across the fingers.

The last photo shows how the first picture should appear at the top of the golf swing. You can see that it then does not matter whether you interlock or overlap the fingers of the right hand. This is a personal preference depending on the size and length of your fingers.
